Ontario's focus on ECA education

As of 2023, Ontario’s Early Childhood Assistant program is undergoing significant changes aimed at enhancing accessibility and quality in early childhood education. The province is focusing on increasing funding for training programs to ensure that early childhood assistants are well-prepared to support young learners. Additionally, initiatives are being introduced to streamline the certification process and promote inclusivity within early childhood settings. These efforts align with the broader goal of expanding child care access and improving educational outcomes for children across Ontario.

Projected job openings for Early Childhood Educators and Assistants (NOC 42202) in Ontario


According to Ontario Labour Market information, the total number of job openings during 2024 2028 period are projected to be: 14,600. The projected job openings will come from replacement jobs from retirement, death and emigration and new jobs. The ratio of replacement and new jobs will be 51% and 49% respectively. More jobs in the category of ECEs and ECAS will be new (49%) in comparison to all occupations where only 38% jobs will be new.

Ease Canada’s labour shortage
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has relaxed off-campus work restrictions to ease Canada’s labour shortage. The 20-hour-per-week cap regulating international students’ off campus work hours will be lifted between November 15, 2022 and December 31, 2023.
